On Monday, a Ryanair flight on route to Rome from Frankfurt was forced to make an emergency landing at Ciampino airport after birds were sucked into an engine on its approach to the airport.

Passengers on board the flight reported hearing a ‘bang,’ after which they saw blood from the bird on the plane’s wing.

On landing, the plane veered to side of the runway, where it skidded to a stop, listing somewhat when its left-side landing gear failed to function normally.

Only five of the 166 passengers on the flight were injured, and those with minor bruises. Many praised the actions of the pilot.

”We were landing when we suddenly felt a bump and smelled something burning,” said Sicilian Gaetano De Caro, who lives in Germany. “We hit the runway hard and were really scared but the pilot was great, he saved our lives.”

”If it had been someone else, perhaps, we would all be dead because we were getting close to the perimeter wall,” he added.

Another passenger, Guglielmo Albertini, who is a member of Italy’s national junior fencing team, said: “The pilot was really phenomenal. There was panic on board, women were screaming and one of them had a turn because of the fright…I hit my head but I’m OK.”
