Ryanair blasts BAA
Posted on: August 1st, 2007 by Jennifer JonesA recent report criticized all airport security measures in the UK but it is Heathrow Airport that has been taking most of the heat. That is, until budget airline Ryanair lashed out against Stansted Airport and the company responsible for the airport operations, BAA.
Ryanair threatened to ground seven of it’s planes over the winter period claiming that the “appalling” service by BAA and the many delays at the airport would necessitate the move.
In April, the airport doubled it’s airport fees to £12 which is one reason Ryanair claims using the airport is no longer viable.
Ryanair is looking at cutting flights from Stansted by 20 per cent over the winter which includes cutting back service to some locations as well as completely cancelling others. The no-frills airline has not announced which flights will be cut although it seems likely that smaller destinations in France, Spain and Scandinavia would be affected.
Ryanair’s Chief Executive Michael O’Leary said: “BAA Stansted’s doubling of airport charges since April has caused traffic declines for the first time in 15 years.
“The current service provided by BAA at Stansted is nothing short of appalling. Many of the 17 security machines are regularly unmanned during peak morning periods, and understaffing at passport control continues to cause long queues and frequent passenger delays.”
Passengers who have already booked tickets on flights which will be grounded will be able to receive a refund from the airline or can book themselves on a different flight.
Mr O’Leary concluded: “We continue to press for the break-up of the BAA airport monopoly which provides abject facilities, a third-rate service and charges extortionate prices.”
