Every travel insurance policy comes with a few pages of fine print. Although reading the fine print can be extremely important to any traveler, in order to understand the coverage provided, it can also be extremely difficult. One area which is often confusing for travelers is the position of insurance companies when it comes to traveling in unstable areas.

It can be difficult to make a good decision about travel when there are so many sources of information available; however, it’s always a good idea to check for government travel warnings before booking any ticket. Not only does the government have updated, in depth information about every country in the world, but insurance companies take this advice seriously, and so should travelers.

A general rule is that if a country is known to be problematic in general, insurance in most cases will be difficult to come by. For example, someone planning a trip to Sri Lanka’s southern region, which is generally considered safe, will not be able to claim on their insurance in most cases, should they decide to cancel their trip after an unexpected terrorist attack in the south.

Even travelers passing through dangerous regions may find themselves travelling without insurance. For example, someone planning a trip by train from Bangkok to Singapore must pass through Thailand’s southern province, an area where the government has advised against travel due to insurgent activity. Should that person decide, against government advice, to make the journey, it’s unlikely they will be covered if something happens.

Its always a good idea to research your destination before booking your travel and to ask your insurance company any questions you might have about the extent of their coverage before purchasing a policy.
