The Qantas Group is going one step further in its security than the traditional metal detector, and the new security technology is being tested at Melbourne’s domestic terminal on a voluntary basis. The passenger screening portal is called the ProVision Portal, which uses millimeter waves to detect any foreign objects a passenger may be carrying.

Geoffrey Askew, general manager of security for the Qantas Group said, “Passengers are invited to view and test the equipment on a voluntary basis in order for Qantas to gain customer feedback on this new technology. The millimetre waves used to generate the individual’s image are not invasive or harmful. The image created simply resembles an outline of the person and indicates the position of any foreign object.

The face is unrecognisable and sensitive areas of the body are blurred. The security operative is the only person with access to the image and that person is located away from the screening location.”

Whether or not the public goes for what could be construed as invasive technology will be the next question.
