On Monday, Qantas Airways is launching the first regularly-scheduled superjumbo service on the A380 from the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The Australian national carrier will operate two round-trip flights each week between LAX and Melbourne and one linking LAX with Sydney.

“Several years ago, we looked at the various options to fly the A380 to different cities in the world, and we quickly came to the conclusion that Los Angeles was the best spot,” said the senior executive vice president for the Americas and Pacific at Qantas Airways, Wally Mariani.

“There was not much debate on the issue,” he commented. “What better place than L.A. to premiere a blockbuster like the world’s largest passenger aircraft?”

The double-decked aircraft is scheduled to make its first scheduled landing at LAX, on the Melbourne-Los Angeles run, on the airport’s south airfield at 7:30am on Monday, local time. From there it will taxi to the Tom Bradley International Terminal.

After passengers disembark, the superjumbo will move on to the Flight Path Museum, located on LAX’s south side, where officials from the airline, the airport, and the city will hold a news conference.

Tickets for the initial flight from Melbourne to LAX – which was sold out – ranged from just over $1,000 in economy class to more than $27,000 for a suite in the first-class cabin.
