The best values for British holidaymakers can be found at long-haul destinations such as Thailand and South Africa, according to a new survey.

Travellers from the UK will find their pounds stretching further in destinations where a lower cost of living is combined with a favourable currency exchange rate.

In addition, increased flight frequencies and reasonably-priced accommodation options make these far-flung holiday destinations more affordable, according to the Holiday Costs Barometer Survey conducted by the Post Office.

The survey compared the costs of items that travellers would typically purchase while on holiday, including a cup of coffee, an evening meal and sunblock, for example, and found that many of the items were 50 per cent cheaper in Thailand and South Africa than in eurozone destinations.

Thailand ranked first in the poll of affordable destinations, and was found to be as much as 41 per cent cheaper than Spain, where mineral water cost three times more per bottle than in Thailand. South Africa came in second, where sunblock cost around half of what it would in Italy.

Andrew Spice, speaking on behalf of Post Office Travel Services, said: “Despite its recent troubles, Thailand remains a great prospect for UK holidaymakers. The Thai baht may have strengthened against sterling but prices remain very low in the country and the discounts now available to top resorts like Phuket and Hua Hin will make Thailand unbeatable value.”
