Polish air carrier Wiz Air is forced to ground flights
Posted on: August 30th, 2008 by Andrew MayerWizz Air, a polish air carrier had introduced flights a year ago that flew between the UK and Poland to accommodate traffic caused by migrant workers. The flights left from Warsaw and had a destination of Durham Tees Valley Airport located in Darlington, England. Because of newly introduced immigration laws migrant workers are finding it more difficult to continue working in the UK. The end result is that migrant worker traffic from Poland to the UK has dropped drastically in recent months. Because of the drop in traffic Wizz Air has to ground these flights due to lack of demand.
A spokesperson for the airport said “Obviously, we are disappointed that Wizz Air has taken the decision to withdraw its service to Warsaw. But, as the airline has made clear, this is just part of the measures it is having to take in light of the current economic situation, the extremely high fuel prices and the fact there has been a marked reduction generally in the number of Polish people travelling to the UK in order to gain employment.”
“Since its launch last year, the route has attracted significant numbers of passengers and was, in fact, the only service between the North-East and the Polish capital. While the air travel industry is facing difficult market conditions, together with severe cost pressures, we are continuing to explore a range of possibilities to increase our range of services from Durham Tees Valley,” added the spokesperson.
