Police shoot hijacker in China
Posted on: March 7th, 2008 by Dave BessPolice in northern China shot a man dead who had taken a bus containing 10 Australian tourists hostage yesterday, with none of the passengers coming to any harm according to the Australian Embassy in Beijing. The reasons for the bus hijacking are as yet unclear.
The bus was hijacked in the north-central city of Xi’an, a city popular with tourists, who flock here to see the unearthed Terracotta Warriors that guard the tomb of Qing, the first emperor of a united China.
The Xianhua news agency reports that a man now known as Xia Tao took control of the bus armed with explosives, and was eventually killed by police after a three-hour stand-off. Confirmation of the man being fatally shot were not confirmed by the Australian Embassy, and local police declined to comment.
The Australian Embassy’s Janaline Oh told media that, “The Australian government is pleased that the hostages are now safe and the embassy in Beijing and Consulate General in Shanghai are providing consular assistance to the Australians affected.”
