Police Arrest Three Emirates Passengers Bound for Dubai
Posted on: January 11th, 2010 by Emily WelchArmed officials apprehended three men last night boarding an aircraft at Heathrow in London after a terrorist threat surfaced surrounding the three individuals. An Emirates plane bound for Dubai was overtaken by police just as the aircraft taxied off the tarmac.
Distraught passengers witnessed three men hauled off the plane by police toting automatic weapons. Witnesses described the suspect as a while male whom police threw into handcuffs and hustled him out of the aircraft. According to police officials, other suspects were also arrested in relation to the raid.
Airports have been on high alert since the failed terrorist attack on Christmas Day which saw 23 year old Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab board a Northwest airlines plane bound for Detroit. The raid was prompted by a verbal threat which came in as the plane taxied off the runway. Upon learning off the threat the pilot immediately drove the plane back to the terminal to be boarded by police.
The threat later came to light as being made by an English passenger who was said the be inebriated at the time.
Although the airport was not closed, a spokesman said that he could affirm the incident and that the flight to Dubai had a passenger arrested for a suspected terrorist threat. In the wake of such terrorist activity, passengers at Heathrow are expected to be the first to see full body scanners go into effect at airport security.
The security measure was announced following Gordon Brown’s speech citing that the UK would begin implementing them into airports to heighten security and make air travel more secure. The Prime Minister said that security had to be heightened to prevent further instances such as the one from Christmas Day.
