The famous Las Vegas strip is unrecognizable from its beginnings as a desert getaway for the rat pack and the like. The word these days is ‘kitsch’, with models of world landmarks lining the streets (even the sphinx isn’t sacred). The newest addition to the veneer of class and pseudo-sophistication is the Palazzo Las Vegas, opened by the Las Vegas Sands Corp at a cost of $1.9 billion.

The Palazzo has been decorated in a European style with all the luxury a gambler can afford, such as all-serviced suites, upscale shopping and restaurants run by celebrity chefs. There is also easy access to its neighbour, the Venetian, another attempt to turn the desert into Europe.

Sheldon Adelson, the hotel’s chairman says, “As we began the design and development of The Venetian in 1995, we always envisioned a second property that would complement and work in unison with the Sands Expo Center to provide the most unique and varied destination resort experience anywhere in the world. In many ways, the opening of The Palazzo represents for us the completion of a vision that started with the construction of The Venetian. For our guests, it provides a new experience and opportunity to savor some of the world’s best dining, shopping, accommodations and entertainment all under one roof.”
