Over four million travelers visited the US in April
Posted on: July 21st, 2008 by Andrew BonesU.S. government statistics show that 4.1 million visitors, from all corners of the world, entered the country in April of this year.
This number is an increase of approximately two per cent on the same month last year. Visitor numbers for the first four months of 2008 were 12 per cent above the same period in 2007, according to a report in Travel Daily News.
Visitors from the UK continue to show a high level of interest in traveling to the U.S., with an increase of 11 per cent in the number of visitors in April, meaning that British tourists accounted for nearly 40 per cent of all Western European arrivals.
The recent weakness of the U.S. dollar is seen as an important incentive in bringing visitors to the country in recent months, and April was no exception. Spending by tourists reached $11.6 billion during the month, which is a record.
More than $45.3 billion was spent by overseas visitors to the U.S. during the first four months of 2008, which is an increase of 23 per cent over the same period in 2007.
In the recent 2008 awards voted on by Travel and Leisure readers, New York was chosen as the most popular North American city, followed by San Francisco and then Chicago.
