The new Open Skies agreement between the European Union and the United States came into effect this weekend, and with it, a slew of new routes from airlines that scramble to get routes into previously unavailable airports, on both sides of the pond. Of course, London’s Heathrow International Airport is the first choice for American carriers who until now have been denied access to Europe’s largest airport.

The latest example is US Airways and its new route connecting Philadelphia and Heathrow. President of US Airways Scott Kirby says, “Given Heathrow’s importance as a European gateway as well as its close proximity to London for business travelers, we are extremely excited to bring this valuable service to the Philadelphia community. Heathrow joins an already impressive list of European destinations we already serve, and in the coming years, with 39 new widebody, long-haul aircraft set to join our fleet, we look forward to continuing our international expansion.”
