Oldest British newlyweds delay honeymoon

Les Atwell and Sheila Walsh, believed to be Britain’s oldest newlyweds, had to delay their plans for a honeymoon after the bride reported feeling dizzy at the wedding.

The couple was married in Paington, Devon after several months of courtship which began after a blind date meeting outside a Tesco store.

The blind date was set up by a cleaner who at the time worked for both the future bride and groom. Months later, when Mr Atwell proposed, it was at the same spot they had first met. He admits it’s not the most romantic of locations, but points out that it does after all, have a special significance for the couple.

The wedding ceremony was held at the Oldway Mansion in Paington, and was followed by a lunch reception with friends and family.

After their wedding, Les and the new Mrs. Atwell were scheduled to take a 14-day Mediterranean cruise. The honeymoon cruise would have taken them to a number of European destinations, like Athens, Rome and Barcelona. Unfortunately, plans for the honeymoon had to be cancelled after Sheila reported feeling faint at the wedding ceremony.

The couple that was packed and ready to set sail was forced to unpack their holiday bags, but Mr Atwell has said he’s sure the honeymoon will happen, albeit at a later date.
