Norwich airport executives confirmed that they have been in talks with airlines in an effort to increase the number of flights at the airport, at a time when analysts are reassuring air passengers that the airport would make it through the financial crisis.

The recent activity follows the grounding of LTE flights two weeks ago, just a few months after Norwich International Airport (NIA) came to an agreement with the Spanish carrier to take over routes cut by Flybe.

The managing director of NIA, Richard Jenner, would not reveal which airlines were involved in the discussions, but did say that he was hopeful of having new arrangements in place by April 2009.

“Our strategy is to have a full range of routes, building up existing ones and getting new niche destinations to other places in the UK and abroad,” Jenner said. “The current climate is difficult but we will do everything to carry on and when things begin to improve to expand again. The situation with LTE is incredibly unfortunate.”

The airport director stressed that NIA has a solid base of corporate and domestic contract and that its operation is secure, but he added that a UK regional airport not having services to Spain was “unthinkable.”

Jenner added that he is eager to conclude deals that would provide the airport’s passengers with flights to more holiday destinations.
