No mechanical faults in runway misstep
Posted on: February 27th, 2008 by Dave BessEarlier this month, a Go Airlines plane flying from Honolulu to Hilo overshot the runway at Hilo International Airport in Hawaii, but the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board says that mechanical malfunction did not play a role in the incident. The report doesn’t make any conclusions as to why the plane missed the runway by 15 miles, but investigation into whether or not one or both pilots were asleep is being undertaken.
Once the plane eventually landed, mechanics checked the plane’s pressurization system to make sure that no lack of cabin pressure had caused the pilots to pass out mid-flight. Nothing was found to be out of order, and tests for carbon monoxide poisoning were also negative.
The flight landed safely, despite having to turn around and approach the runway from the opposite side. Air traffic controllers said they couldn’t contact the plane for 25 minutes, testing nerves about the fate of the two pilots, one flight attendant and 40 passengers onboard.
