No injuries aboard damaged cruise ship
Posted on: May 9th, 2008 by Andrew BonesA Greek cruise liner sustained a 5 foot slice out of its hull when pulling away form the pier in Irakilo, Greece according to the country’s officials. The damage was above the water line, and once discovered, the ship made way for the island of Milos. The Ministry of Merchant Marine spokesman Andreas Theofilou reported that none of the 1,200 + people on board were hurt, and that no one was in any danger.
The ship is operated by the Louis Hellenic Cruises, whose spokesman Michalis Maratheftis said that the hole was caused by strong winds and the absence of rubber bumpers on the pier. He said, “The gash is well above the water line and there is no danger to the passengers.”
This is the second time that a Louis Hellenic Cruises ship has sustained damage in the Aegean Sea. Last year a more severe case saw a ship hit rocks off the shores of Santorini and sink.
