Newark to restrict flight arrivals
Posted on: March 12th, 2008 by Dave BessFrom now on, peak-time flights into Newark, New Jersey’s Liberty Airport will be reduced by 13 percent in an attempt to curb the chronic delays that plague New York City’s airports. Starting in May, Newark’s peak-time flights will total no more that 83 flights per hour. Last summer the airport received an average of 95 flights in a peak hour, causing sever problems with delays.
A similar cap on incoming flights will take effect this Saturday at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to try and solve the same problem that last summer, allowed 100 flights per hour to wreak havoc with scheduling. LaGuardia Airport has already implemented caps on flights during busy times.
So how do the airlines feel about this, when it could mean les flights for them? A continental Airlines spokesman said that they would certainly be affected by the caps, but in the interest of the greater good, they would be committed to making it work.
