A motel owner in Palmerston North, New Zealand, tired of the rowdy behaviour of guests from the town of Wainuiomata, has banned the entire town of 16,000 inhabitants from checking into his establishment.

Steve Donnelly, who owns the Supreme Motor Lodge, decided on the controversial move, because “each time they visited, our life became less exciting.”

He said: “I’m not Santa Claus. I can’t figure out who’s naughty and who’s nice. So we went ahead and banned all of them.”

Donnelly noted that he finally made his decision after three groups from the town of Wainuiomata, checking in on different dates over a six-month period, upset other guests at his 51-room property.

“We have moms and dads who come here with two or three kids to relax,” Donnelly added. “They don’t want some loudmouth spitting on the pavement, flirting with girls and swearing.”

Even members of parliament are included in the “No Vacancy” status, as lawmaker Trevor Mallard learned when he decided to test the ban.

“He’s barging in here with a TV camera, trying to book a room to prove a point,” the motel owner said. “We just stood at the front door and said, ‘You’re not welcome here. Go away.’”
