New airline fees take effect
Posted on: May 6th, 2008 by Katy DaviesYesterday was the day American air carriers have been warning us about. As of now, five of the six biggest airlines in the United States will be charging an additional $25 dollars for those who wish to check in a second bag. The sixth carrier, American Airlines, will instill similar rules next week, with other North American operators like Air Canada and Alaska Airlines expected to join the club in the next few months.
These additional costs are just one facet of a bigger issue facing flyers, the a la carte flight experience that’s emerging certainly isn’t gong to be saving anyone money, as everything from snacks and even phone operator access on some airlines is now all coming at a price.
While in some ways new measures can be seen as offering passengers to pay for services that were heretofore included in an inclusive ticket, in other ways passengers used to slipping that extra ten kilos through the check-in may be finding check-in clerks less enthusiastic about looking the other way and sending the overweight baggage through.

What will they be charging for next? A coin slot to use the toilets on board the planes? $25 now to check in a second bag is a bit too steep for people who need to travel regularly as a part of their job, what about a compromise?
Say…$10 or $15 instead
