Myanmar to receive flights from China Southern Airlines
Posted on: July 10th, 2007 by Dave BessMyanmar, or also unofficially known as Burma, is a deeply troubled country in Southeast Asia. The military junta that seized power ahs ruled with an iron fist for years. The army has imprisoned Aung Sang Suu Kyi, a political dissident who opposes the military regime and has campaigned for democratic elections.
In short, Myanmar is rather isolated without many links to the outside world. It is certainly not a common tourist destination and not so many airlines have Yangon (Rangoon) or Mandalay on their itineraries.
Now there seems to be a sign Burma is opening up a little, with China Southern Airlines announcing it will commence service into the capital city of Yangon three times a week flying from Guangzhou. This is the third airlink between Myanmar and China.
Air China has been flying to Yangon for many years, and China Eastern Airlines has held a route from the Yunnan province capital of Kumming to Mandalay for a while now, and it also flies three times a week.
