Falling temperatures in parts of Britain are signalling the arrival of more snow and a repeat of the travel chaos experienced earlier in the week.

Met Office forecasters are saying that the chill will descend again on Wednesday night, leaving residents in the Midlands and south Wales anticipating school closures and travel disruptions.

Although conditions were improving in the South East, where travel was brought to a standstill on Monday and Tuesday, other areas are being warned of up to eight inches of new snow on Wednesday night.

Forecaster Steve Ellison, of MeteoGroup, the Press Association’s weather division, noted: “The most extreme of the weather is moving north. The highest points in south Wales and the Midlands will get up to 20cm of snow over the night and into the morning.”

He went on to say: “But further south the thaw has begun – temperatures are unlikely to drop below freezing in London in the coming days.”

According to the Met Office, the new snow is expected to fall across Gloucestershire and also the Midlands.

The AA has said that the road forecasts for Wednesday night were “on a knife-edge.”

Across the south, air and rail services gradually returned to normal on Wednesday, and more schools reopened, but both pedestrians and motorists had to deal with icy surface conditions due to plummeting temperatures.
