Marriott International Announces First Guyana Hotel

This will also be the first Marriott Hotels & Resorts branded hotel to open in the Caribbean and Latin America that has Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification, which is given by the US Green Building Council, and it’s set to happen in 2013.
The hotel chain said that the 160-room hotel will operate under a management agreement with Atlantic Hotel Inc, which is currently owned by the Guyana government. This is part of a public-private partnership between private sector investors and the government.
Marriott International chief development officer for the Caribbean and Latin America, Laurent de Kousemaeker said that they are thrilled about the partnership with Atlantic Hotel Inc and the Government of Guyana in opening their first Marriott Hotel. This represents their presence in another South American capital city, he continued. The new property will also be their first LEED hotel in the region, he added, and they are confident it will play a key role in the continued development of the country’s economy.
President Bharrat Jagdeo, representing the Government of Guyana, says that they look forward to a first-class, quality branded hotel operated by Marriott International. This project will transform the landscape of hospitality and can be expected to urge more travel and tourism developments in the nation, he continued. It will be an integrated entertainment complex located at the corner of Demerara River and the Atlantic Ocean, he added, featuring a casino, boardwalk, restaurant and nightclub.
