Many Britons seek to avoid badly behaved masses abroad
Posted on: August 31st, 2008 by Dave SmithAn increasing number of British travellers are staying away from areas that are the most typical destinations of UK holidaymakers, according to a recent study.
About 57 per cent of those participating in a survey conducted by private bank Cater Allen indicated that they intended to avoid the mainstream tourist destinations are were instead looking for something a bit different.
Slightly more than half of those who reported that they were seeking alternative holiday destinations added that the reason for doing so was the bad behaviour of so many UK holidaymakers when they visit traditional European destinations.
From the survey results it appears that more travellers are becoming as discerning about their accommodation choices as they are about destination. More than one-third of respondents preferred a beach-side villa, while 14 per cent chose a deluxe hotel complex and 12 per cent said they preferred a luxury urban hotel.
Cater Allen’s director of marketing, Sally Watts, noted: “Britons are becoming more discerning about where they holiday and are keen to avoid stereotypes of British unruliness abroad.
“Indeed, today’s international Britons are far removed from this image, preferring luxury lodges and holidays that reflect their ambitions.”
A full one-third of those responding to the survey reported that their annual holiday is one of the three things that are most important to them, and they said further that they spent approximately 10 per cent of their yearly income on travel.
