Manchester Airport has gotten a boost recently with announcements from 3 big Middle East carriers that they plan to increase capacity out of the city. Emirates Airline, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways have all said they plan to add services this year.
The hub was the busiest airport in the UK outside of London last year, with 17.6 million passengers using it. Emirates announced earlier this month that they are going to launch a 3rd daily flight to Manchester starting May 1. This will increase the carrier’s capacity by 25%, a move that comes after the existing services proved to be popular among travelers, with the 517-seat A380 aircraft they use operating at full capacity already. The announcement from Emirates came within days of Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways saying that they will operate 2 daily services from Doha and Abu Dhabi to Manchester.
The addition of services from these 3 airlines comes at a time when British Airways, which pulled its operations from the airport in 2008, said that they have no intention of resuming international flights from the hub at the moment. During an interview, Willie Walsh, the chief executive of International Airlines Group (IAG), which consists of British Airways and Iberia, said that the British airline didn’t find their Manchester Airport flights profitable, which is why they chose to be based out of Heathrow Airport.
Passengers will most likely welcome the new capacity at Manchester Airport, especially since British Airways has confirmed they don’t plan to go back there any time soon. The hub will also enjoy the additions, with chief executive Charlie Cornish saying last month that the airport is estimated to serve an extra 4% of customers this year.
