According to reports, a worker believed to be in his 20s and from South Asia committed suicide on Tuesday by jumping from the 147th floor of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. Police say that their operations room got a call involving the suicide at the world’s tallest man-made structure, and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was immediately deployed to the scene with investigation teams. This is the first suicide at the landmark building, which opened in January last year.

Security officials say the worker, who was employed by a company that is stationed in the tower, landed on the deck of the 108th floor after falling 2,717 feet from the 147th floor, which is a commercial floor with no occupants. He is believed to have hit the metal barriers of the tower, causing some damage to the property. Colleagues are said by police to have stated that the man was refused a requested holiday.

Emaar Properties confirmed that an incident involving a male was reported at Burj around 9am. The proper authorities are investigating the incident, and the company is awaiting the final report, it added. A resident of the building, who wants to remain anonymous, is cited saying that the man left a note, adding that staff and concierge are remaining quiet about what happened.

The Burj Khalifa was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which is a Chicago-based firm that is known for engineering some of the tallest buildings in the world. The tower is also said to be the world’s tallest freestanding structure by its developer. Last year, Tom Cruise was seen hanging from the building during filming for the newest installment in the Mission: Impossible series. Then in March, a French skyscraper climber was successful in reaching the top of the building in 6 hours using a rope and harness.
