Luxury cruise ends in disaster with three dead
Posted on: March 4th, 2010 by Andrew BonesThree people were killed instantly when an outsized luxury cruise liner rammed into the pier, on Friday, while it was docking at an Egyptian Red Sea Resort. There were almost 1,500 people on board.
The passengers were given hotel accommodation and arrangements to get them to their domicile countries are being made. Witnesses assumed the blustery winds had rocked the area overnight causing the vessel to slam into the pier.
People deem the bad weather to have caused the collision. The brunt was so forceful it left a 2-meter hole on one side of the boat. The ship had been on an 18-day cruise from Dubai to Savona and had 1437 people aboard. Rescuers and police said the three people killed were and Indian, Brazilian and Honduran, although the company has not disclosed the nationalities of the deceased who were believed to be crewmembers.
The ship weighs 55,000 tons, was manufactured in 1986, restored in 2008 and resumed service with Costa Cruises in 2002. This is one out of 16 ships that belong to this cruise line.
Some experts find it implausible that winds could have caused this fatality while others say it could be possible for gales to move the boat whilst it was in the water. An official report should be out in the upcoming weeks.
