Lord Mandelson slimed by Plane Stupid protester

A 29-year-old woman was arrested after throwing green custard in the face of Lord Mandelson, the British Business Secretary, on Friday, according to comments made by a Metropolitan Police spokesman to CNN.

The woman, a member of the Plane Stupid group that opposes the expansion of airports due to climate change issues, threw a green slime-like liquid that she had been carrying in a disposable coffee cup in Mandelson’s face as he got out of his car in London where he was to attend a meeting about carbon emissions.

This particular act was in protest against the government’s support of Heathrow Airport expansion.

Plane Stupid identified the woman as protester Leila Deen, who was required to appear at a central London police station on Saturday. She was not charged, and released on bail. A police spokesman said that she would return in April.

Deen said that she hid the custard in a cup so that it looked like she was carrying coffee. “It was a grave decision that I had to take to highlight this, but we cannot have people like Peter Mandelson standing by and being applauded for his actions on climate change when he’s agreed to the third runway and bullied others into that,” she said.
