London’s rail services look set to suffer further disruption, after a number of services were cancelled over the weekend. Shortage of staff has been identified as the reason behind the cancelled services, even as hundreds of commuters found themselves forced to find alternate means of transport.

A route running into London’s Kings Cross station was cancelled, and temporary bus services were put into place to help the beleaguered travellers get to their destinations.

In the short-term future, Sunday rail services look especially at risk of being cancelled, as railway staff have in some cases refused to work overtime at the weekends. Many officials have said this is a covert attempt at a strike—and have held unions responsible—although the unions have hotly denied this allegation.

Many of the weekend routes are operated by voluntary workers opting to put in overtime, and there in seems to be the problem, as fewer and fewer drivers are choosing to put in the hours on the weekend.

Perhaps the most unfortunate fall-out of the Sunday cancellations will be reduced services on Memorial Sunday, when thousands of Britons travel to honour their martyrs.

The FCC (First Capital Connect), one of the train companies to be affected by the refusal of drivers to work on Sunday have said they have been making efforts to contact members of the Royal British Legion, to alert them to the transport situation that will likely arise on this day.
