Thailand’s resort island of Ko Samui is set to have more air traffic in the next couple of years. Bangkok Airways, Thailand’s largest private air carrier plans to defer some of its international traffic from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to Samui, making the island a second international hub after the capital.

Bangkok Airways is undertaking a growth strategy, with plans for direct flights from Ko Samui International Airport to places like Dubai, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Vice president of Bangkok Airways M.L Nandhika Varavan said the plans coincide with the delivery of new Airbus A319 aircraft, with the first of six jets already in operation. She went on to say, “The definite launching dates of these international flights has yet to be decided, but are unlikely in the very near future.”

Samui is known as a domestic airport, with the grand majority of international flights using Bangkok as the entry point to Thailand. With over 600,000 passengers using Samui every year already, the airport is set to see a marked increase in those numbers when the international schedule kicks off.
