Jinnah International Airport Using Ineffective Bomb Detectors
Posted on: January 28th, 2010 by Dave HumphriesThe Jinnah International Airport is continuing to use outdated bomb detecting equipment which notable scientists and the British government have identified as unsafe and unsuitable. The Airport Security Force, who are in charge of all security at the airport, have continued to use the device, known as the ADE-651 made by ATSC, based in the UK, despite it being deemed ineffective.
The system was shipped to over 20 countries at, reportedly, overpriced costs. The construct is comprised of an antenna mounted to a handgrip, there is no power source needed, and the device, supposedly, uses static electricity to search passengers for any explosive devices or substances.
The British Government is now construction an order making it illegal to ship the product to countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq under the notion that it is putting UK citizens at risk to have these devices being used as proper means of security in these, high-risk countries.
British authorities are also investigation Jim McCormick, the managing director for ATSC, and have charged him with fraud for the sale of the device to foreign nations as an adequate means to detect explosives.
A senior official at Jinnah Airport, however, claims that the ADE-651 is not in use at the airport, but that a system which was approved by ASF is being used. However, when other officials at the same airport were interviewed, they confirmed that the device operates in the same way as the ADE-651. Experts on such equipment have shown shock that Pakistan would still use such equipment.
