Robert Lewis, a 36-year-old employee of MidwestAirlines, hit the jackpot when he stumbled upon a large bag at the Kansas City International Airport  on Monday. Lewis was finishing the shift of his second job of the day when he found the bag, after having worked a total of 17 hours.

The 40-pound bag found by Lewis belonged to a company known as Helzberg Diamonds and was full of diamond rings and wedding bands worth a total of $266,000.

After opening the bag and seeing the contents, Lewis immediately called the police.

“For one second, I thought, ‘I could bury this in my backyard and then pull it out when I’m 60 years old or so,’” he said. “By then, no one would remember it.”

Instead, he handed it over to officials.

He was commended by Helzberg’s CEO Marvin Beasley as a “shining example of what makes Kansas City a great place to live and work.”

In addition to the glowing praise, the company also awarded Lewis with a $10,000 reward.

Lewis, who was working two jobs to help pay for his wedding, plans to use the reward to pay off credit card bills and start a savings account for his children.

“They could have just told me, ‘Thank you,’ and walked away,” he said, “so I truly appreciate this.”
