Intrepid sends aid to Burma
Posted on: May 9th, 2008 by Jennifer JonesFollowing the immense scale of damage caused by cyclone Nargis that has wreaked havoc in Burma, the Intrepid Foundation, part of the Intrepid Travel adventure company, has donated $19,000 in aid to the impoverished country. Intrepid CEO Darrell Wade says, “I have traveled to Myanmar several times in the past and it’s heartbreaking to hear the extent of the destruction. Intrepid Travel stopped operating trips to Myanmar in 2001 due to its political and human rights issues, but we see this as no reason to withhold aid in this time of absolute crisis.”
The money will be put to use largely by French organization Medecins Sans Frontieres, who has been surveying the damage. Carolyn Vaughan says, “In Daala and Twanta, two townships of Yangon with a total population of 300,000 people, MSF teams saw 80% destruction of houses in some pockets as well as meter-high flood waters. In these two areas, MSF is distributing food, water and other essential items for 5000 people.”
