Inclement Weather Halts Travel in UK
Posted on: December 22nd, 2009 by Jennifer JonesBritain’s holiday seasonal travel has hit chaos all over the country as heavy snowfalls continue to rain down across the UK. Most of the country has been brought to a partial standstill as airports, railway lines, and roads are cleared from the constant onslaught of snow.
Thames Valley Police are cautioning motorists to remain in their vehicles should they become trapped in by the snow and try to stay as warm as possible until help can arrive. Kent Police are also warning that motorists should avoid the western area of Kent altogether. The AA reported some 22,000 stranded motorists by the close of last night.
London and the South East have seen the most action with almost 1,200 stranded motorists calling in by the hour. The most affected areas currently are the Channel Tunnel and Gatwick. Air travellers were also having difficulties as London’s airports at Gatwick and Luton were both forced to suspend flights overnight. British Airways was forced to cancel all flights between Europe and the UK bound for departure at Heathrow after 19:00.
The Eurostar, in light of recent malfunctions, has been suspended for three days running now, with the high speed railway operators citing inclement weather as the problem behind the train malfunctions. Eurostar will resume Tuesday on a restricted schedule.
Widespread warnings have been spread out across the highways around the country as well as heavy sleet and snow make roads dangerous and icy for travelling motorists. Authorities have cautioned motorists to drive slow and use appropriate equipment avoiding hazardous conditions wherever possible.
