Hundreds of motorists stranded in West Country snow
Posted on: February 6th, 2009 by Dave BessHeavy snows have left hundreds of West Country motorists stranded on the A38 in Devon, near Exeter, police have reported.
Conditions are likely to mean travel chaos during the Friday morning rush hour in several parts of the country, including London, as weather forecasters are predicting that more snow is on the way.
The Met Office issued a severe weather warning, with conditions expected to disrupt travel in the South East, and in parts of the East, the East Midlands and the South West of England.
Heavy snow is expected to fall overnight on Thursday and during the rush hour on Friday morning in Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, London, Somerset and southern Oxfordshire.
Rail passengers are likely to experience disruptions of services in Wales, the South West, the Midlands and Yorkshire.
Driving conditions on the country’s roadways are particularly treacherous in Wiltshire, on the M4 and M5.
Concerns are growing over diminishing supplies of grit and salt used to treat icy roads. The AA has claimed that the shortage will put lives at risk.
“This is a very serious situation with some roads becoming death traps,” said the president of the AA, Edmund King. “The Government should step in to assess the situation and ensure that salt stocks are maintained in the places at immediate risk from snow and ice over the coming days.”
