from the large extensive website:
Each night a daily program will be delivered to your stateroom announcing the suggested dress for the following evening.
Evening dress falls into two distinct categories: Formal or Smart Casual. Smart Casual can be defined as slacks and sports shirt or sweater for men and skirt or trousers and sweater or blouse for women. T-shirts, swimsuits, tank tops and shorts are not allowed in the restaurants or public areas during the evening hours. On festive Formal evenings, ladies usually wear a cocktail dress or gown and gentlemen usually wear a suit and tie or tuxedo. There are approximately two formal nights per week.
I just wondered who’s actually paying? Do they not think anyone has common sense…?

Holland America are a very decent cruise company with a heck of a reputation that they keep up at all times and always have. Everything about the services I experienced with them was absolutely first class and dress codes being formal / informal is normal to keep up the decency of what many regular cruise travellers expect.
Seeing tank tops and bikinis in the ballroom is an obvious no-no but some folks still don’t understand or seem to think that it matters.

Dressing formally is all part of the fun on cruises such as those, and it’s not a lot to ask just to wear a shirt to dinner, it makes the staff treat everybody as equals…….
