Holiday package provider Seguro enters into administration
Posted on: September 12th, 2008 by Dave BessThe travel industry continues to take a beating as holiday package provider Seguro enters into administration. The collapse of the company is thought to have left around 2,500 customers stranded abroad. To make matters worse for those that are stranded available flights seem to be sparse.
Barrhead Travel in Scotland owned by Bill Munro noted that “It’s come at an unfortunate time because there is so little availability just now and I don’t think the public realize just how bad it is. It’s been exacerbated with Ryanair cancelling flights from Edinburgh through late delivery of aircraft and there’s up to 40,000 people there looking for alternative flights.”
Munro added that “Some of the other tour operators are capitalizing on it by putting their prices up by £50 to £100 per passenger.” Barrhead Travel estimates that it booked approximately 3,000 customers for holiday packages with Seguro.
One family affected by the breakdown of Seguro is stranded in Gran Canaria. Graeme Lusk with his wife and young child noted the communications he was encountering trying to get a new flight home. “If someone was here to tell us what was going on or we were told somebody would be here tomorrow at lunchtime to let us know…it would be fine. There’s uncertainty just now.”
Some tour operators are working hard to accommodate those that are stranded. The Thomson spokesperson noted that “Alternative flights are currently being confirmed for customers booked to travel imminently and options are being explored for those customers travelling at a later date.”
