Heavy snows hit Scotland transportation

Dozens of Scottish schools have been closed due to heavy snowfalls, and transportation in the country has been affected as well, with reports of hazardous road conditions and numerous flight cancellations.

The Scottish Borders Council has said that all of the region’s 74 schools will be closed on Tuesday because of the snow forecast overnight.

At Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, more than 130 flights were cancelled and some Heathrow services were diverted to Prestwick airport.

The Met Office has issued weather warnings for many areas in southern and eastern Scotland.

By Monday afternoon, Edinburgh airport had cancelled 33 outbound flights and 30 inbound. At Glasgow airport, 23 outbound flights and 21 inbound were cancelled, and at Aberdeen airport, 12 outbound flights and 13 inbound were also cancelled.

Prestwick airport’s manager said they were expecting to handle as many as one thousand additional passengers as long-haul flights scheduled to land at Heathrow were being diverted to Glasgow due to the weather conditions in London.

Passengers from the US, the Middle East and Asia were being accommodated at local hotels overnight.

Other services are reportedly subject to delay as well, and travellers heading south are being advised to check with their airline before leaving for the airport.
