Groupon Inc, the global daily deals pioneer, and Expedia announced last week that they have teamed up to create Groupon Getaways with Expedia. This new deals service is predicted to launch in the US and Canada later this month, with an expansion to other countries to follow.
With this offering, consumers will be able to get about 50% off hotels, airfare and car hire – compared to the retail prices of other travel websites – while each deal will only be available for a limited period. Consumers can sign up now to start getting email offers even though the service hasn’t officially launched.
Groupon chief executive Andrew Mason says that Groupon Getaways with Expedia fits the company’s offering of local deals, as it will help people get out and explore the world. The company is excited for the chance to use Expedia’s vast network of world-class travel providers to deliver to them unmatched exposure and offer wonderful services to millions of consumers at the same time. Consumers will be able to book hotel rooms and airfare from Expedia with a big discount – which follows a similar partnership the company made in May with Live Nation Entertainment.
Expedia Worldwide president Scott Durchslag says everyone wins with this partnership. Suppliers will be able to reach a bigger audience with no upfront cost, travellers will get wonderful deals for travel to dream locations, Groupon can extend its business into new markets, and the ‘Expedia Everywhere’ strategy can be advanced with the delivery of daily deals through a powerful new high growth channel.
