Recent reports indicate that Terminal 2 at Glasgow Airport may just curl up and hibernate this winter.

Airport authorities are reported to be considering closing down the terminal during the winter months, in an effort to save money. The proposed move comes along with a host of other measures being considered to help cut costs at Glasgow Airport.

easyJet, the budget carrier currently operates a number of routes from terminal 2. While the decision to close the terminal has not yet been confirmed, it is understood that such a measure may help the airport authorities to cut operational costs significantly.

The global recession has necessitated a number of cost-cutting measures across the travel industry, with a number of mainstream airlines choosing what are being labelled as low-cost-carrier tactics to help stem losses. The airline industry has seen the introduction of a slew of add-on charges like baggage check-in charges and seat-reservation charges among leading airlines like British Airways.

On the ground, airports have also been feeling the pinch, with passenger numbers shrinking due to the global recession.

Glasgow Airport recently saw a 9% year-on-year decrease in passenger numbers, a trend that is reflected across many UK airports.

Edinburgh airport has been an exception, it has recorded nearly a 4% increase in passenger numbers in the recent months.
