Gatwick going strong despite volatile economy
Posted on: December 22nd, 2009 by Andrew BonesGatwick is reportedly the second busiest airport in the UK this year. According to its latest report, it has seen another year of increased traffic growth. For the second month running it has shown positive growth.
The airport reportedly handled almost two million passengers in the month of November alone. In November 2008, the figures were lower by at least 4.5 percent.
Gatwick carried 88,000 people more this November. Gatwick is also the world’s most used single runway.
Increased passengers flying to European destinations contribute to the latest growth spurt. The figures are said to be at least 18 percent higher from last year. Passengers travelling to the Channel Islands and around UK have drastically increased by a minimum of 8.8 percent as compared to last year. Long-haul flights have also shown a rise in numbers with only North Atlantic destinations not following the rising trend.
Stewart Wingate, the chief executive officer at Gatwick, expressed happiness at the new statistics being observed. He believes that the resulting figures prove that Gatwick is proving its worth as an independent airport for the first time and it is affirming its worth in the travel industry.
The market currently is highly competitive and the fact that Gatwick is now showing positive results adds to the constant speculation that planning permission for the new runway might be a distinct possibility. Gatwick is proving its mettle and has risen to be a strong player in the travel and tourism industry. After fighting it out with a volatile recovery, it has shown signs of remarkable recovery.
