The Galactic Suite Space Resort architects have announced that the path breaking project is progressing on schedule, and should be open to tourists by 2012. Just last week, reports came in that showed an anonymous billionaire had granted $3 billion to finance the space resort project.

The Barcelona, Spain-based team of architects working on the revolutionary ‘resort’ have said thy are confident the project will be open for business in 2012. Over 200 space enthusiasts have expressed interest in visiting the space resort when it is completed, and 43 of these have already made a booking, although there are still lingering doubts about the time-frame and final costs for the project.

When completed, this will be no budget resort. A three-night stay at the Galactic Suite Space Resort will cost a cool three million euro, although the price tag does come with an eight-week space tranining course to be conducted on a tropical island.

Galactic Suite spokespersons believe space tourism will be common place in the future.

For this project, when it blasts-off, passengers will be transported to the space resort by rocket. They will join the space capsule for three days, after which they will return to earth in he transport rocket. Galactic Suite has said it hopes to commence this project with a single pod to be in orbit 450km above the earth’s surface. The pod, travelling at a speed of 30,000 km per hour, will be able to hold guests and two astronaut-pilots. There will be no staff on board.
