Passengers on the 1,486-passenger Carnival cruise ship Celebration had no idea that they were harboring a fugitive from the law when the ship pulled away from port in Jacksonville, Florida on Thursday. US Marshals captured Derron Keenan Williams on the cruise ship after it has left shore on its way to the Bahamas.
Williams led Atlanta police on a chase after he allegedly used a vehicle to attack another man with whom he’d had a previous argument during a party that evening. He was charged with aggravated assault and felony murder when the victim died.
Police traced Williams’ steps and found he’d fled the state on a Jacksonville-bound flight. The police missed him at his Jacksonville motel and had to fly onto the cruise ship, after they arrived at the scene moments after the ship had pulled away.
A Carnival press release states, “The ship was contacted by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Department regarding a wanted suspect in an alleged crime who was among the vessel’s passengers. The ship’s command made arrangements to rendezvous with a U.S. Coast Guard cutter once the vessel reached the end of the channel, (and) the two vessels met at the agreed upon location. Various law enforcement agency personnel boarded the ship and took the suspect into custody.”
