Memorial Day in the United States is a day set aside for the people of the nation to remember all those who have died fighting for its defence. It is observed every year on the last Monday in May. Whether or not people really do take the time to remember the fallen or not, they certainly do take advantage of the day off and the holiday from work. Many people travel to visit family or just to take a holiday. This year, an American travel agency known as the AAA is predicting record numbers of Americans will be on the road.

The survey conducted suggested that Americans would still be taking their cars out, despite some of the highest prices of fuel ever. With petrol selling for $3 per gallon, it seems strange that people would still be planning a road trip. AAA’s survey did reveal that travelers are not planning to go as far as they used to but will be going on short trips, traveling close to home.

The average household in America is spending around $600 a month on expenses relating to transportation, the study showed.

“High gas prices and increased vacation costs won’t deter Americans from traveling this Memorial Day,” the vice president of travel for AAA, Sandra Hughes, said in a statement. “Families will travel closer to home, they will travel for fewer days and will save money by staying in less expensive hotels and eating in cheaper restaurants, but they will continue to take vacations and plan getaways.”
