Foreign Office relaxes travel advice on Thailand
Posted on: December 8th, 2008 by Katy DaviesFollowing the resumption of operations at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the Foreign Office has relaxed its travel advice to Britons planning travel to Thailand.
Although it is still warning of possible travel disruptions, the FCO advice now merely advices travellers to check with their tour operator or airline before heading to Thailand.
This update is a significant reduction in the level of warning issued the day before which suggested that British travellers avoid flying to Bangkok for “the foreseeable future.”
The Foreign Office’s advisory now reads: “The airports are slowly returning to normal. However, the political situation remains uncertain.”
In continues by stating: “Anti-government demonstrators have threatened to blockade Bangkok airports again should their political demands not be met. Further serious disruption to the transport network cannot be ruled out. Please check with your airline or tour operator if you intend to travel into or through Bangkok airports and monitor this advice.”
The advice concludes with the statement: “It is likely to be several days before normal flight schedules are resumed. If you are currently in Bangkok waiting to fly back to the UK or elsewhere, you should monitor this advice closely and keep in touch with your airline or tour operator.”
For those already in Thailand and waiting to return to the UK, the FCO is suggesting that they contact their airline for assistance if they are without accommodation.
