Food poisoning hits British tourists vacationing in Egypt
Posted on: July 10th, 2008 by Dave BessBritish tourists who stayed at hotels in along the Red Sea in Egypt are filing claims for compensation by the hundreds. The tourists all came down with food poisoning during their stays at several hotels. Areas affected were in Sharm El Sheikh and included St. George’s Three Corners, Concorde El Salam Red Sea Holiday Village, LTI Tropicana Grand Azure, and the Grand Plaza Hotels. Two other resorts affected are the Moevenpick Resort Hotel and the Intercontinental Hotel in Taba.
Andrew Morton with Pannone LLP who is handling many of the compensation claims said “This is a very serious outbreak of illness and the bug is affecting a lot of people. Many of the holidaymakers are returning home say that their holiday tour reps ignored their complaints or even worse, told them they were just suffering the effects of too much sun or an excess of alcohol. We are investigating the complaints very seriously and will be taking legal action where appropriate.”
Morton cautioned that it is possible that other resort areas were affected by the outbreak which has been confirmed to be cases salmonella, and cryptosporidium. He also said that those returning for these areas should follow up with a doctor upon their return to the United Kingdom.
Also mentioned by Morton was “The good news is that holidaymakers seeking compensation have the benefit of powerful consumer legislation in the Package Travel Regulations 1992. These regulations entitle the people who suffered from the sickness that ruined their holidays to claim for compensation against the tour operator in the UK, under UK law.”
