Fake grenade shuts down airport
Posted on: July 14th, 2007 by Jennifer JonesPart of the terminal building at Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Conn., was forced to shut down for 40 minutes on Wednesday morning after security scanners discovered what was thought to be a grenade in the luggage of a 78-year-old man from Utah.
Security personnel evacuated 500 passengers and airport staff from the surrounding area in Terminal 1 while authorities investigated, according to a spokesman for the airport, John Wallace.
After investigating, State police determined that the object was in fact a grenade, most likely a military souvenir, but there was no chance of it exploding.
Never the less, the elderly man with the grenade in his bag, Harold Falslev, from North Logan, Utah, was charged with breaching the peace. His bail was set at $250 and a court date before the Enfield Superior Court was set for July 17th.
Luckily the man was not travelling during the peak travel time and the incident cause only a few flight delays. No flights were cancelled as a result.
“These were minor inconveniences, but of course safety and security of our passengers and the travelling public is the number one concern,” Wallace said.
