Eurostar Train Breaksdown from Heavy Snowfall
Posted on: January 8th, 2010 by Andrew BonesA Eurostar train is stuck in the Channel Tunnel after traction problems were caused by the intense, heavy snowfall sweeping across the UK at present. The train operators, who have previously had trouble with harsh weather conditions interfering in operations, were forced to tow the train from the tunnel.
A spokesman for the high-speed train operators announced that rescue engines were sent down with the aim of removing the train from the tunnel by towing it. Shortly after experiencing traction problems the train was pulled from the tunnel, where it then continued its journey to Ashford, Kent.
A second train bound from Paris to London on the 8.07 route encountered a similar situation getting stuck just outside of the tunnel in France. Heavy snowfall was affecting the high-speed trains performance and causing them to malfunction.
It has not been officially determined as to why the second train broke down, however, the harsh snowfall across the country has been contributing to transportation issues and delays across the board. A number of trains were cancelled in the wake of freezing temperatures and heavy ice patches on the tracks and roads.
Eurostar is expected to issue a release with more information this afternoon after the cause of the breakdown has been formally established. A spokesman for the company has advised passengers to continue to check-in on time for scheduled train services and await instructions from their departure location.
This latest series of breakdowns comes just shortly after the high-speed train operator fell under criticism after five of the trains experienced electronic malfunctions stranding hundreds in the Channel Tunnel for hours. Those malfunctions were also reported as being caused by the heavy snowfall.
