EU restricts shoddy airlines from entering its air space
Posted on: July 3rd, 2007 by Neill ZerkAfrica is currently attempting to form an organization to monitor and enforce aviation standards of quality. The European Union has already banned 74 African airlines from flying to Europe, with a total of 91 airlines forbidden to enter European air space.
The blacklist continues as Europe bans all Indonesian airlines and others from Russia, Ukraine and another African country, Angola. This is all due to safety concerns says the European commission.
While the blacklist grows, Europe has allowed certain flights offered by Pakistan International Airlines to resume traffic between Europe and Pakistan.
Of the new revisions, the commission vice-president Jacques Barrot said,
“Once more, the EU blacklist will prove to be an essential tool not only to prevent unsafe airlines from flying to Europe and to inform passengers traveling worldwide but also to make sure that airlines and civil aviation authorities take appropriate actions to improve safety.”
After a string of accidents and tragedies at the hands of Indonesian aircraft, all Indonesian carriers are banned. In fact, the only Indonesian airline that serviced Europe was the national carrier, Garuda, who stopped its flights to Rome and Amsterdam two years ago.
