Posted on: July 16th, 2008 by Dave SmithEtihad Airways took advantage of the Farnborough International Air Show to announce its purchase of 100 fuel-efficient aircraft worth a total of $20.4 billion.
Etihad is the national carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and chose to reveal its deal at one of the largest commercial aviation events in the world.
The Abu Dhabi-based airline also revealed that it is considering purchasing an additional 105 airplanes, with the contracts to be shared between rival manufacturers Airbus and Boeing. The total value of the contracts would be approximately $22.6 billion.
“This is a momentous day for Etihad Airways and Abu Dhabi and represents one of the largest aircraft orders in commercial aviation history,” the airline’s chief executive, James Hogan commented.
“The new generation aircraft we have ordered from both Boeing and Airbus are among the most fuel efficient and will help maintain Etihad’s fleet as one of the youngest and greenest in the sky,” he said.
The contracts that have been signed so far are for 10 B777-300 and 35 B787 aircraft. In addition, the carrier has options for an additional 10 Boeing 777s and 25 Boeing 787s. Etihad Airways has also agreed purchase rights for another five Boeing 777s and 10 Boeing 787s. Deliveries of the aircraft will begin in 2011 and continue through 2020.
