It was thought that England would do well at the World Cup this year, but this hasn’t been the case. During the team’s first two games, the end results were ties, but then they won their third game against Slovenia last week. With hopes that the team was just getting started, things only got worse on Sunday when Germany beat England 4-1, knocking the team from the tournament.

During the first half, Germany was up 2-0 with goals from Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski. Then Matthew Upson scored for England, bringing the team within reach of a win. However, their momentum was crushed when a shot by Frank Lampard wasn’t counted. The ball had hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line, which was clearly shown in the replays, but the referee and his assistants didn’t count the point. This has outraged fans and caused a lot of controversy.

Moving on, there was still a chance for England to pull something off during the second half, but this was short-lived when Germany’s striker Thomas Mueller scored 2 goals about midway through. It wouldn’t have been so bad if they weren’t only 3 minutes apart from each other. The only shot that England had of scoring after that was created by Captain Steven Gerrard. During the final 10 minutes he took a shot, but this was saved.

England will now be knocked from the rest of the World Cup, while Germany will go on to the quarter-finals for a match against Argentina on June 3. Another match for June 2 has also been determined to be Uruguay versus Ghana. The other 2 quarter-final games are still to be determined from the teams that win the rest of the knockout round today and tomorrow.
